Dentures and Partials Dentures

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They can be made to resemble natural teeth so that the appearance is natural-looking.

Partial dentures are removable appliances used to replace missing teeth when there are still healthy teeth remaining. A dental framework attaches to your natural teeth and holds the denture in place. Partial dentures are a good option for patients missing several teeth in a row. On the other hand, complete dentures replace whole arches of teeth when all of the natural teeth in the top or bottom arches have been lost or need to be replaced.

Why Do People Wear Dentures and Partial Dentures?

There are many reasons why patients need dentures. Sometimes it is medically necessary to correct a dental problem. At other times, patients choose to get dentures for cosmetic reasons.

A full set of teeth makes it easier to eat and speak. Without them, speech would be more difficult, the ability to chew would be compromised, and facial muscles can sag, making a person look older. Dentures can help a person eat and communicate better.

How Are Dentures and Partial Dentures Fixed?

When you come in for a dental checkup, your dentist will talk to you about your options for replacing missing teeth. In the case of dentures, the dental procedure starts with impressions. These molds of your mouth will be used to make dentures that fit perfectly. Your dentist will make these molds in accurate detail, which helps provide a comfortable and safe fit for your dentures.

If a partial denture is recommended, your dentist will also take impressions and measurements and send them to a dental lab. Your dentist will let you know when to come back in for your partial denture when it is ready.

After the partial denture is fitted, patients should continue to practice good oral hygiene. This means brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, rinsing with mouthwash, and visiting the dentist regularly. This is on top of cleaning and soaking the dentures. Patients should also schedule a checkup with the dentist every six months.
