Dental Checkup

A dental checkup is an appointment when the dentist examines the teeth, gums, and bite for signs of disease. At the checkup, the dentist looks for signs of decay and gum disease that could weaken the teeth and cause significant pain. The dentist also examines the jaw joints and bite for symptoms of dysfunction.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Checkups?

Regular dental checkups are an essential part of the oral healthcare routine. During the appointment, our dentists will perform a comprehensive dental exam. They will check for tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer, ensuring that any dental problem or issue can be treated in its early stages. They will also check the existing restorations, such as fillings, crowns, and bridges, to ensure that they are still strong and intact.

How Often Should I Get a Dental Checkup?

The American Dental Association (ADA) advises that dental checkups happen every six months. If the patient has kept up a consistent oral healthcare routine, the dentist might recommend coming in every six months. However, if they have certain risk factors for tooth decay or gum disease, the dental checkup frequency might be more often.

What Happens During a Typical Dental Checkup?

During the checkup, our dentist will gather information to help us identify potential issues before they turn into oral health problems.

Our dentist, Dr. Tyler Ehrick, DMD, will examine the teeth and gums for signs of decay. If he identifies a cavity, he can treat it right away with a tooth filling. Dr. Ehrick will also examine the mouth for periodontal disease, which affects roughly half of all American adults. If he suspects the patient has periodontal disease, Dr. Ehrick will recommend the appropriate treatment.

Standard Procedures Performed During Dental Checkups

Checkups Are the Primary Way to Detect Dental Problems Early

A checkup is an appointment to visit the general dentist regularly. During these routine visits, our dentist will clean the teeth, perform an oral cancer screening, and evaluate the teeth and gums for signs of decay, disease, and other problems through examinations.

X-rays and Scans Can Help Identify Problems Below the Gum Line

Patients can get X-rays and scans when scheduling dental checkups. X-rays can help the dentist see cavities and reveal other problems. To get X-rays, patients will bite down on a sheet of film.

Cleaning Removes Plaque and Tartar Buildup

Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that cannot be removed through regular brushing. During the cleaning, the hygienist will also polish the teeth. This removes stains and brightens the smile.
